In a feat almost as impressive as Apollo 13, we were able to gather all three legendary OMEGA Snoopy watches together in the same room. We decided to size them up in the metal, from aesthetics and functionality, to the story behind each watch. Buzz Aldrin’s Speedmaster ST 105.012, which was the actual watch worn on the Moon (and thus the original and only true “Moonwatch”), was later stolen under mysterious circumstances under transit to the Smithsonian Museum in the early 1970s, and remains one of the greatest lost timepieces in history. The Speedmaster available today is virtually the same as the one Aldrin wore on the moon, or indeed the one Omega introduced way back in 1957, as a tool for race-car drivers.
Although the popularity of Moon landings began to wane – the last man to set foot on the Moon was Eugene Cernan in 1972 – NASA implemented its Space Shuttle programme in 1978 and the Speedmaster was recertified as the official watch. With six Moon landings under its belt, accompanying every US manned space flight since 1965 and currently in . Exposing the timepieces to massive oscillations in temperature, from 93ºC to -18ºC, violent shocks of 40 g’s, high and low pressure, humidity, a corrosive oxygen environment, noise and vibrations, the only watch to endure the torture was Omega’s Speedmaster.The watch that had gone to the Moon became an instant icon, coveted by watch enthusiasts and space fanatics alike.
