What is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese type of spiritual practice also used for stress reduction and relaxation. It is a technique that also helps promote healing either for self or for other people. It is characterized as a practice of “laying of hands”.

Reiki is a spiritual and physical healing practice that helps individuals overcome health issues and produce stress management in their lives. Reiki has been used for healing since the end of the last century but is still growing in popularity today.

The healing powers of the technique are based on the idea that there is an unseen “life force energy” that flows through each person. This life force is said to be the reason why people are alive. When one’s life force energy is low, then people are likely to get sick or feel weak. If the life force is high, people feel healthy and happy.

Reiki is also a form of meditation used as a type of therapy for treating physical, emotional, and mental diseases. The name is taken from two Japanese characters that describe energy itself. The word “rei”, which means “unseen” or “spiritual” and “ki” which means “energy” or “life force” is combined to become Reiki. In English, its meaning is usually given as “universal life energy”.

The Founder of Reiki

It was Mikao Usui who was known to have developed the healing technique in 20th century Japan. The story has it that Usui received the ability of healing after going through three weeks of fasting and meditating on top of Mount Kurama.

How to become a Reiki Master

There are three levels of Reiki that must be completed in order to become a Master. These are the First Degree level, the Second Degree level, and the Master/Teacher, or Third Degree, level. Each level is explained below.

Reiki master female

First Degree Reiki

In the First Degree level, you’ll learn how it works, Its historical background, and the different types of systems that exist today. You’ll also be initiated into Reiki and receive your first energy experience through attunement.

Through attunement, you’ll learn first-hand how to tune in to Reiki energy and use it for stress management and physical and emotional healing. This initiation usually involves lying on your back or stomach while a Master or practitioner places his or her hands from your head to toes to approximate the traditional chakra locations. The energy flows through the Master’s hands into your body.

Although much training is provided through home courses and online courses, you should receive your attunement through a master to fully understand Reiki. Once you’ve experienced it for yourself, you’ll start learning how to give others treatments.

Second Degree

In the Second Degree level, you’ll expand on your initial experiences. You’ll learn about distance healing as well. Distance healing involves channeling energies to someone in another town or even another country! The energy vibration is different from this type of Reiki. It has a higher proportion of energy from the Source and a lower proportion of Chi than the First Degree level. Where the First Degree level promotes primarily physical healing, the Second Degree level promotes healing on a mental, spiritual, and emotional level.

Master/Teacher/Third Degree Level

In the Master/Teacher, or Third Degree, level, you’ll learn how to use Reiki symbols and what they mean. You’ll also learn how to use various methods of stress management such as healing drumming and crystal healing with crystals. You’ll become familiar with sacred mantras and how the different energies work so you can teach others. You’ll also be able to perform attunements.

There are many workshops, online and offline, to help you learn Reiki. There are also places you can go to have a wonderful experience, such as the Bell Rock Vortex in Sedona, Arizona. Wherever you go or whomever you choose to help you along the Reiki journey, make sure to open yourself fully to the energy so you can experience its true healing power.

Does Reiki work for everyone?

Reiki will only work to the degree that the person’s higher self will let it work. If the person is open and willing, the energy will flow a go straight where it is needed. If the person’s higher self doesn’t accept it, the energy cannot get in. Sometimes when people are getting ready to die, Reiki can be a wonderfully peaceful way to the spirit realm.

Healing doesn’t just mean to cure, but the healing of the person’s spirit and a return to wholeness!

Who can give treatments? Any practitioners that are level II and higher. Level III and or Master have more advanced techniques that they learn to help different groups of people. If your practitioner is level II, they will be able to help as good as a Master for general treatments.

What is distance treatment?

These are treatments sent over long distances for healing when the practitioner cannot travel to where the patient is. For instance, an American practitioner may send healing to someone in Australia. Again, all you need is the intent for it to be sent. Draw your distance symbol and send the loving energy to whoever needs it.

There are many groups that sent healing to the earth itself after the tornadoes and tsunamis hit the coast of many countries. You can even send healing into the future for yourself or others. There is no limit on the good you can accomplish.

How do you get a treatment?

Locate a practitioner and ask about their credentials. Treatments usually run between $30 and $100. Some of the practitioners may do distance sessions if you cannot get to their office. They will include a note to tell you anything they picked up while sending the treatment.
