Panerai's new Submersible Elux LAB-ID watch goes for ,300 a pop and is limited to 150 pieces with a lume that required four patents to create. It has an impressive water resistance of 500m and its case and bezel are made from Ti-Ceramitech, Panerai’s new ceramized titanium material that’s 44 percent lighter than stainless steel and ten times harder than ceramic. The case is made from an alloy that Panerai calls Ti-Ceramitech, a patent-pending ceramized titanium material with an unusual and very distinctive blue hue that Panerai says is inspired by the ocean.
Following its rich history into luminescent watches, and a recent eight-year stint, Panerai unveils a world's first in luminescent technology: Submersible Elux Lab-ID. Panerai did this by using Super-LumiNovaTM X1 to outline the case and essential elements. It’s the latest generation lume, and it glows like there is an ’80s neon party taking place on your wrist. All jokes aside, I love that the Panerai designers used lume to draw a watch. Not just any watch, but a Panerai watch.
Modern Lume Materials. Today, the most commonly used materials for lume in luxury mechanical watches are Super-LumiNova and LumiBrite. These materials are non-radioactive, safe to handle, and offer strong and long-lasting luminescence. Super-LumiNova, developed by the Swiss company RC Tritec, is a strontium aluminate-based photoluminescent pigment. But where Panerai is going with the Supermersible Elux Lab-ID, we don’t need lume. Instead, a host of LEDs illuminate the watch’s functions, powered by electricity generated in the movement.
